New 2026 Mortgage Rule Quietly Lets Ontario Homeowners Switch Lenders At Renewal Without Facing The Usual Stress Test Barrier

Here’s a change almost nobody outside the industry is talking about: Canada’s regulator has dropped the stress test requirement for “straight switch” renewals, so many homeowners can now move to a new lender without re‑qualifying at a higher rate. That means if you renew for the same balance and amortization, you may finally be able to shop the market instead of feeling trapped with your existing bank, even in a higher‑rate environment. I’m meeting Ontario homeowners who assumed they were stuck, only to discover we can move them to a more competitive lender at renewal—sometimes shaving meaningful dollars off their monthly payment without triggering a fresh stress test. As a local mortgage broker, my job is to know these rule changes the moment they happen and use them to give my clients leverage and real options at renewal time.
